Symptoms

Below are some of the symptoms a person who has depression and/or bipolar disorder may contend with. This list is not all inclusive though and a person may experience other symptoms as well. DBSA Harrisburg members are not trained to make diagnoses nor prescribe treatment for depression or bipolar disorder. Therefore, we suggest that if a person is experiencing the symptoms listed below or other like symptoms, to contact their family doctor or consult with a mental health professional. 

            Symptoms of Depression
                    - Prolonged sadness or unexplained crying spells
                    - Irritability, anger, worry, agitation, and/or anxiety
                    - Pessimism, indifference
                    - Loss of energy, persistent lethargy
                    - Low self-esteem or feelings of worthlessness
                    - Significant changes in appetite or sleeping patterns
                    - Thoughts or wishes to end one’s life 

            Symptoms of Mania
                    - Heightened mood, exaggerated optimism and self confidence
                    - Grandiose delusions, inflated sense of self-importance
                    - Excessive irritability, aggressive behavior
                    - Decreased need for sleep without fatigue
                    - Poor judgment, easily distracted
                    - Racing speech, flight of ideas, impulsiveness
                    - Reckless behavior such as spending sprees, rash business 
                        decisions, erratic driving, sexual indiscretions
                    - Psychosis (loss of reality)
